How to make portfolio Graphic specifications

The purpose of page templates is to give you the chance to develop your ideas first you should sketch out the layout of the front page, this page should have a creative design that reflects you in such a way that would make people want to see what was inside of your portfolio. The introduction page, this should have some information about you within it, things included in this should be things such as your name, contact details (such as email address or telephone number) and should also include a short explanation of everything included within the portfolio. The inspiration page should be a collage or as it’s referred to in the media industry a mood board, the mood board should have everything that inspires you as a creative person included within it so that a viewer of your portfolio can see everything that makes you the creative person you are. The page template for each piece of work should have a consistent theme and design. Each page should show the best pieces of work which you have designed or created, the reason all this should be done is to show off your skills and abilities as this is such a competitive industry you need to make people want to see your work and leave them wanting more.

File formats/ printing.

The reason why file formats are important within a portfolio is because it ties in with printing, when printing I would recommend setting the dots per inch (DPI) at 300, and always set the colour mode to CMYK (cyan magenta yellow and black) this is the mode in which printers print colours correctly the reason I would set the DPI to 300 is because it allows for finer detail in printing giving the maximum quality and when creating a portfolio you want everything to look as nice as possible, avoiding distortion is incredibly important as if something is distorted within your portfolio it will look unprofessional and the viewer may just walk away without even viewing your work simply because of distortion in your work. File formats are important too for example saving a photo as a PNG makes it a lossless image as I previously mentioned in the previous posts lossless means all the detail is stored within the image and it loses no detail and no information however a high quality JPEG will if printed in CMYK and at 300 DPI will look just as good and will be easier to store and transfer on a computer.

 Saving is always important in work especially when designing the portfolio and the content of the portfolio, the reason for this is because you do not want to lose anything you may have designed, an easier way to save is to use the keyboard short cut (CTRL/S) this will save your quickly and effectively.

Audience Needs.

The audience needs for the portfolio should be one of your main focuses the language within it should be easy to read however it should be professional terminology and definitely shouldn't include slang, the reason for this is that you want to set a positive professional example of yourself words are as important as the actual pieces you have captured created or designed.

Visual style

Visual style is important to the portfolio it is everything that is needed to make your portfolio stand out above everyone else’s, colour theory is important colours you choose should reflect what kind of person you are, for example blue is a colour that is liked by both males and females it shows you are kind and trustworthy, these traits could be important to a person who wants to hire you, and having these colours in your portfolio could make or break the interest of a person, Alignment is also very important you are meant to be professional so make sure to use guides and rulers to make sure everything is aligned if something isn't straight when its meant to be this could lose you someone who is interested in your portfolio, gestalt theory which is the theory of shapes shows people what to do, for example arrows lead to the next page these are important as they could indicate that some work continues on the next page. Typefaces this is the type of font you use serif which are the fonts with flicks at the ends of letters or sans serif which are the straight edged fonts. More detailed things include the law of continuity this is important as every page needs to look the same with the layout the reason for this is that if something has moved even a centimetre on one page to the next it could be noticed and be seen as unprofessional and remember in the media industry being professional is what really counts, an example of this is if a curve is on a page and it splits off in 2 paths our eyes will adjust to follow the smoothest path.

Raster vs Vector

Raster images

Raster images are made up of pixels, as was mentioned within the previous post pixels build up an overall image, now we get in to more detail about these pixels each pixel is given a specific RGB (red, green,blue.) value the purpose of this is to build up the detail of the image.


Lossy means that mean compressed information is disguarded in order to make the file smaller this however looses detail within the image and can cause images to become blocky when zoomed in file extentions that do this are JPG and PNG and PSD.

 Vector images


Vector images are made of lines,curves and polygons these shapes have points on them these points can be adjusted and manipulated without loosing resolution meaning they can constantly be edited without loosing information unlike raster images which loose information each time they are manipulated these images can be saved in the following file extentions EPS (encapisulated post script.) AI (adobe illistarater.) Or FLA (flash authorising file.) they can only be saved in this way because they are not made up of pixes they are made of the lines,curves and polygons i previously mentioned.

Optimising it now the final curtains been drawn.


Optimising is to make an image information size smaller so it can be easily viewed anywhere but in certain cases it will have to be optimised in order to be viewed this is where all the previous posts I have written comes to the big final lesson. Bit depth is the detail of a pixels colours the more bits in a pixel the more colours and information it holds and the greater the detail the overall image will hold.
Image resolution means the detail in an image the higher the resolution the bigger the file will be because of all the information stored within the image.

The dimensions of an image are the width and length of that digital image it is usually measured in pixels per inch in order to re size your images for use in different things.


And finally the image output this is a big thing with HD screens becoming more and more detailed more pixels are held within these screens at the moment the top screen is a 1080p This type of monitor can hold a lot of detail making images feel real and look true to life outputting an image to this will allow the resolution of an image to be very highly detailed compared to say an old monitor from ten years ago that wouldn't have the capability to hold as much detail because it cannot store that amount of pixels.
 

Gotta catch em' all images


Image capture refers to anything that can capture an image for example a scanner or digital camera scanners can make a digital version of an image captured by a non digital camera (an image that is physical for example a picture from a disposable camera or polaroid picture.) 
Where as a digital cameras images can be easily transferred and stored on a memory stick or memory device such as a hard drive depending on the file size, file size contains the information of the captured image and holds all its pixels resolution and colours compressing these images in to jpeg s may loose some of this information making them have a lower resolution than before, however there is something called asset management, asset management keeps any information that is important such as the type of camera used the date what settings were used in case you need this information for future reference.

The Colours from space.

 Colour space put simply means range of colours types of colour space are grey scale which are just different shades of black grey and white. RGB which in a previous post i taught you meant red, green and blue.

YUV is the closest thing to human perception of colours the Y stands for luma or luminance  Luminance means the brightness of something  Chromanance means the depth of the actual colour and allows the colours in an image to look more natural to the human eye.

HSV stands for Hue, Saturation and Value, in web designer’s guide to graphics PNG,GIF&JPEG hue is a measurement of the colours position on the colour wheel. It’s what we usually mean when we say colour “green,” “red,” “yellow,” and so on. Saturation is a measurement of how “pure” a colour is. As colours become less saturated, they become grey. And brightness means, well brightness the amount of light in the image. (Referenced page 42)

Its a bit depth


 Bit depth is the colour information stored within an image this is sampling as it makes the colours components (the things that make up its colour) its purpose is to store the bits per pixel within an image the higher the bits per pixel the more colours a colour pallet will hold.
A monochrome pallet for example consists of only 2 colours black and white this is a 1 bit image.

A low colour pallet is an 8 bit image and contains 256 colours


Anything above a 16 bit image is a high colour pallet and can contain up to 65536 colours. To people with  normal vision eye this might look like real life however as is said in web designer’s guide to graphics PNG,GIF&JPEG ‘folks with sensitive eyes might be able to see the difference.’









A 24 bit image is true colour and has around 16777216 colours meaning it is true to life colours.

Pix it up


The word Pixel is short for picture element, a pixel is made up of phosphor dots these dots are not designated to any single pixel they are designated by the screen.(referenced from web designer’s guide to graphics PNG,GIF&JPEG page 30) pixels hold incredibly detailed information, the purpose of this information is to build up a larger image.


The higher the amount of pixels in a monitor the greater the resolution of the image, this means the image will hold more information and ultimately be much more detailed and clear to view.

Now we move on to the harder stuff, a pixels intensity is how bright a pixel is and this corresponds with the detailing of the information that pixel holds the brighter the pixel the more detail it will hold and the higher the quality of the image.
